The Salvaged Pot Rack

Mission:
Find an attractive piece of iron fencing at the salvage yard
and use as a pot rack in the kitchen. Hang from the ceilling
with chain. Be sure to secure the hanging hooks into studs
for safety. Use metal s-hooks to hang pots, pans
 and utensils.
I've always wanted to hang a pot rack
above my kitchen island.
I wanted to find something I could salvage
 and repurpose. Something unique.
I did not want a store-bought pot rack.
We found this wrought iron window security
bar at a salvage yard in Miami.
We cleaned it and it sprayed black.
Long chains were attached to the ceiling
beams with big screw eyes. It's a heavy piece
and I wanted to load it up with all the pots
that I use the most. My favorite cast iron
skillets are now just a reach away.
I've added large colanders, baskets, a few
antique tools and even my wood pizza paddle.
It's fully loaded!
I just had to add the rope of garlic.
I like the look, even thought it's dried now.
It's just what I wanted.
Cheers!

  1. What a terrific idea! And look at all those baskets! Wow! I gave up on that collection when I retired from teaching. Just too many things I want on a limited income...and my husband doesn't even feel sorry for me- LOL
    Thanks for sharing!

  2. Hi Rita May,

I do love your pot rack. I have wanted one for YEARS :) That was a very clever idea. We took our trip to western NC, that I had told you about in an e-mail about a month ago. I finally did the post on the place we stayed (The Blue Waters Mountain Lodge). I linked the post to Seasona Sundays, if you're interested. We didn't make it to the Great Smoky Mtns. Ntnl. Park,or Bryson City, but we did drive through Nantahala Park and Highlands, NC. Have a good week.

  3. Fantastic! You have a great imagination, Rita. In NH I used an old herb drying ladder over my island. Can't do that here in Fl as there is a big light above so the ladder is hanging on a wall with all my copper cookware.

  6. Rita, what a fantastic way to think outside the box. I would have looked at that piece and walked away thinking what do I need a security bar, duh. Thanks so much for sharing, maybe there is hope for me after all.

  9. Great to find and re-use something. Love the pot rack, though if I had one in my kitchen I'd worry the ceiling would come crashing down with it, I don't think the joists could take it!

  11. I love a pot rack and I have one over my center island, but it's not as imaginative as yours. But it looks good and gives me accessible storage. It's a wonder we don't see more of them in kitchens.

Your kitchen is beautiful. Thanks for sharing it.

  14. That looks amazing, I'm so jealous, my ceilings are far too low for a pot rack.

  16. I love it. I have been scared that my cast iron pans would be too heavy, but you have inspired me to hang them as well as everything else. Love what you did.
